“Yes! Of course! November 5, 1955! That was the day I invented time-travel. I remember it vividly. I was standing on the edge of my toilet hanging a clock, the porcelain was wet, I slipped, hit my head on the sink, and when I came to I had a revelation! A vision! A picture in my head! A picture of this! This is what makes time travel possible: THE FLUX CAPACITOR! - Dr. Emmett Lathrop Brown

The Original Prop
A particle collider, engineered with a 4th dimensional component, the Flux Capacitor makes time travel possible by creating, containing, and releasing a concentration of tachyon particles which, when properly focused, create a wormhole and open a portal through the time continuum. As seen in the Back to the Future trilogy, the Flux Capacitor is prominently featured in Doc Brown’s DeLorean Time Machine. There were three DeLorean Time Machine props built for the original 1985 film. They were referred to as the A-car, B-car, and C-car during production. Each prop car was used for various purposes, including shooting interior and exterior scenes where the Flux Capacitor can be seen in different states of fluxing.

The A-car prop was the “hero” car and was the most featured in scenes throughout the film. Unfortunately, over the years, it had fallen into serious disrepair and was almost lost to time. However, in 2013, thanks to a group of fans, working with Universal Pictures, Amblin Entertainment, and Back to the Future co-creator Bob Gale, the A-car, including the Flux Capacitor, was restored to its former glory! This restoration process can be seen in the excellent documentary, OUTATIME: Saving The DeLorean Time Machine.

The Replica
Factory Entertainment’s goal was to create a standalone replica of the Flux Capacitor and make it look, feel, and sound like it came directly out of a DeLorean Time Machine from Doc’s lab, which is why the decision was made to focus our research on the fully restored A-car. The Flux Capacitor in that car features details that differentiate it from those used in the other cars in the series and, in our opinion, makes it the most definitive version to replicate.

The Factory Entertainment team studied high resolution film footage from the series, scoured every available printed resource, and consulted with the foremost experts on the prop, including those who restored the A-car, to create a replica that is truly accurate.

The Flux Capacitor prop replica may look simple at first glance, but it is actually a complicated piece that is comprised of several different components, each steeped in its own nuance. Each component was recreated utilizing a variety of prototyping and production techniques, including digital sculpting, various methods of physical casting, identification and sourcing of vintage materials, and digital sound extraction/recreation and design.

Enclosure
Factory Entertainment consulted with the original manufacturer of the real-world utility box which housed the original prop to replicate not only the size and shape of the enclosure, but also the correct paint scheme for the vintage box, which is no longer in production.

Relays
These are made from accurate gauge brass sheet and tubes. Small details, like the tiny solder hole at the end of the tube cradles, were also incorporated. Secondary black brackets that attach the relays to the backboard and are also accurately represented here. The transparent tubes are manufactured from pressure-cast resin with a brass rod cast right into the piece. To finish, accurate spark plug wires and caps were designed and incorporated into the replica.

Relay Labels
These labels were custom designed, based on screen reference, and feature three accurate relay serial numbers. The individual serial numbers for each relay, in the correct position on the backboard, are those featured in the A-car. External Piping The piping and elbows on the outside of the enclosure accurately replicate those seen in the restored A-car.

Sounds
All sounds featured on this replica are based on and extracted from audio masters from the film series.

Electronics
The Factory Entertainment Flux Capacitor Prop Replica features electronic sound and light effects that emulate the look of the original prop, but in a self-contained portable unit powered by either AC or 6xAA batteries. To operate the unit, our team added period-appropriate physical controls on the side of the replica designed to have an in-universe feel. A remote, powered by 1xCR2025 battery, is also included to operate the replica from a distance.

Once powered on, the replica provides two modes, activated by separate buttons:

  1. Power On (Idle): Here the flux tubes are illuminated and fluxing, and the sound of rough static electrical discharge can be heard. The chase sequence of the LEDs matches what’s seen on screen.

  2. Time Dispersal (the flash symbol on the remote): Pushing this button causes the Flux Capacitor to recreate the pattern seen once the DeLorean time machine reaches 88 miles-per-hour and goes through the time jump seen in the first film. The lights in the replica match the cadence of the flashes seen from the exterior of the DeLorean.

The replica also features volume controls. On the side of the replica, an analog volume control knob is located underneath the Time Dispersal button. The remote features + (plus) and - (minus) symbols to allow the user to adjust the volume level of the replica’s sound effects or to display it silently in flux mode.

While not technically able to transport you to another decade, Factory Entertainment’s Back to the Future Prop Replica is the next best thing to time travel itself! We are proud to present this collectible to all fans and enthusiasts of the classic film series.

Each museum quality replica includes a numbered plaque, prop story booklet, and remote control to power on and control the replica.
